Swim 2021 Process

Posted on

We are talking all things swim!! We also just announced that our first Swim Collection of 2021 will launch next Friday, March 19th in store and online, it is so exciting and it is a huge process, a lot of hard work goes into it!! I wanted to take you along with us on the swim journey and show you the process start to finish of how our swim collections work.

I first started the design process for the Pink Desert brand swim collection in June of 2020, first comes the idea and then I begin the initial sketches. Simultaneously around the same time I work on print inspirations for swim. Our swim prints are custom designed and you can't get them anywhere else. We work with a graphic designer to create our own unique print that is printed onto fabric.

People ask all the time where I get my inspiration, well the first print inspo of this collection came last summer when my daughter and I were eating popsicles together and she said "MOM YOU SHOULD DO A POPSICLE PRINT FOR SWIM" and I fell in love with the idea!!

After you have sketches and prints it takes about a month to finalize the print. Next we do "strike offs" to test the print, color and scale of the print on actual fabric. This process takes about 2-3 months to get our fabric prints finalized, printed and shipped out to our manufacturer.

After the first popsicle print was finalized, I built the solids around this print. I wanted happy, bright, and neon colors for Spring & Summer! The collection evolved as I added more custom prints and solids for an overall playful, fun, and youthful collection!

Around the same time my design lead starts working on what is called a tech pack. A tech pack is a sheet that designers create to communicate with a manufacturer of all the necessary components needed to construct a product such as the fit, specks and measurements, it also has all of our style measurements, trim requirements, trim placements, fabric info, etc. We send this to our pattern maker in LA to make our first pattern. Our Manufacturer in LA then sews the first sample and sends it to us for fittings! This style took 4 sample fits to complete, throughout this process we have a fit model come in and do fittings and make adjustments from there such as dropping the neckline by 3/4 of an inch, or changing the length of the flutter sleeve, until we get to the perfect fit.

Once the pattern and fit is perfected our manufacturer then "grades" our pattern into sizes that run from XS-XXL. We then order all of our fabric, lining, bra pads, hang tags, trims and then finally our suits are proudly cut and sewn here in the USA.

This whole collection was designed during covid so I really wanted a happy, bright, fun collection that has a mix of neons, leopard and fun prints. I hope you love it as much as I do!!!
